Background of the Study
Gender inequality remains a pervasive issue in many societies, including Nigeria, where women continue to face discrimination in various sectors such as education, employment, and politics (Adebayo & Musa, 2023). In Nigeria, the Constitution enshrines fundamental human rights, including equality before the law and freedom from discrimination, but the practical implementation of these constitutional provisions has been inconsistent, particularly with respect to gender equality (Abdullah & Tukur, 2024). Kano Municipal Local Government Area, located in Kano State, is known for its large population and cultural diversity, which often influences gender roles and expectations (Nwankwo, 2025). Despite legal frameworks aimed at promoting gender equality, traditional cultural practices, patriarchal norms, and limited access to resources continue to hinder the advancement of women in this region (Oni & Bala, 2023). This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of constitutional law in addressing gender inequality in Kano Municipal LGA, with a focus on the implementation of laws that aim to protect women's rights and promote gender equality (Micheal & Danjuma, 2024). By exploring the intersection of constitutional provisions and local gender dynamics, this study will provide insights into the successes and limitations of constitutional law in promoting gender equality at the grassroots level.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although Nigeria's Constitution guarantees gender equality and protection against discrimination, gender inequality remains widespread, particularly in Kano Municipal LGA. The region's sociocultural dynamics often reinforce gender disparities, limiting women's access to opportunities in education, healthcare, and economic participation (Adebayo & Musa, 2023). This research aims to examine how constitutional law has been applied to address gender inequality in Kano Municipal LGA and explore the challenges women face in asserting their legal rights. The study also seeks to determine whether constitutional provisions have translated into meaningful improvements in the lives of women in the region.

Socio-cultural barriers significantly limit the effectiveness of constitutional law in promoting gender equality in Kano Municipal LGA.
Legal literacy programs targeting women improve their awareness and ability to access constitutional protections related to gender equality in Kano Municipal LGA.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it will contribute to the broader understanding of the role of constitutional law in addressing gender inequality in Nigeria, particularly within Kano Municipal Local Government Area. The findings will be valuable to policymakers, gender activists, and legal practitioners who seek to improve the enforcement of constitutional provisions aimed at promoting gender equality. Additionally, this research will highlight the practical challenges faced by women in asserting their constitutional rights, providing recommendations for improving legal frameworks and societal attitudes towards gender equality (Abdullah & Tukur, 2024).
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on Kano Municipal Local Government Area in Kano State, Nigeria, and is limited to the examination of constitutional law's role in addressing gender inequality in this region. The study does not extend to other areas of Kano State or Nigeria. Limitations include challenges related to accessing sensitive information on gender inequality, especially from local authorities or affected individuals.
